Change of Plans

Reflection

Composing “Change of Plans” developed a completely new set of skills not previously discovered when creating “Distant Memory.” Instead of working with four-part writing, practice period regulations, and voice-leading rules, “Change of Plans” allowed me to explore the world of atonality. I was able to develop an appreciation for the creative planning that goes into composing atonal music. I really enjoyed writing “Change of Plans” because I didn’t feel like the “beauty” of my piece would be compared to any other due to its unique sound and rhythmic motion. I continued to work on refining my knowledge of Finale, while taking several liberties with musical articulations to find the sound I was looking for. I learned that composing atonal music can be very liberating and has the potential for being a very useful tool in a music therapy setting.
