"Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and a richness to life that nothing else can bring.”

~Oscar Wilde

Throughout my life, I have valued my love for family and God above all things. Since beginning my musical career as a third grader, my family has been my biggest support. Music has allowed me to establish a deep, unique, and personal relationship with each of my family members. For example, my father and I would always stand next to each other in church so we could harmonize our favorite hymns together. My oldest sister Logan and I would perform Christmas duets for every Christmas Eve service. She would take the melody on the cello, and I would harmonize on my viola. Bridget, my youngest sister, loves to cover popular songs on her guitar while I join on the piano, guitar, or ukulele. My beautiful mother always enjoys listening and quietly singing along to her favorite songs. Finally, music blessed me with the opportunity to have a very special connection with my Grandpa, Richard Besse.

Every Sunday afternoon, I would drive in from Lincoln to Seward and spend the day with my grandparents. Once I arrived, I would open my voice books and allow my grandpa to pick a song for me to sing. Grandpa would listen, softly cry, and gently clasp his hands together as the song came to an end. He helped me realize that my music had the ability to touch people’s emotions and influence their overall wellbeing. He inspired me to pursue a career in music therapy and share my love for music and performing with the world. Without his motivational praises and wise guidance, I would have never come to realize my true potential. My grandfather passed away this last August, but his push to follow my dreams still guides my desire to succeed. Becoming a music therapist will give me the opportunity to show people the warmth and richness that comes when one is shown love through the healing power of music.
